FAQs
Membership
Q: If I am not a member of the American Legion, the Sons of the American Legion or the American Legion Auxiliary, can I still join the American Legion Riders?
A: Unfortunately, no.
Q: If I am a member of the American Legion, the Sons of the American or the American Legion Auxiliary, but not at Post 200, can I still be a member of Post 200’s American Legion Riders?
A: Absolutely, yes!
Q: If I am a member of another American Legion Riders chapter, can I also Join ALR Post 200?
A: No, per William H. Sloan, Assistant Director, Internal Affairs and Membership, The American Legion, “The restriction is that they can only belong to one chapter at a time. They can be a member of another post. Many Riders (like me) have membership in one post, but belong to the ALR chapter of another post.
Just as one person cannot belong to more than one American Legion Post at one time, a rider cannot belong to more than one Chapter at a time. But he does not have to belong to the post to which his chapter is connected.
Q: What are the yearly dues for membership?
A: $10 a year, which is the calendar year (Jan 1 through Dec 31). No matter when during the year you join up until Nov 30, your dues will be $10 for that year. If you join in December, your dues will be applied for the next calendar year.
Q: Can I belong to more than one American Legion Riders chapter?
A: No. You do not have to belong to the same ALR Chapter as the Post you belong to, but you may not belong to more than one ALR Chapter.
Participating in Rides
Q: My riding partner is not a member of any American Legion organization. Can he/she still participate in the rides?
A: Yes, but as a guest, not a member.
Q: Where does all the money go that is raised during the ride events?
A: We will support a primary charity, to be determined by vote of the members, and we will support Legion functions. Most of the ride events don’t make us money, they are to support the cause we are riding for, such as the Toys for Tots. The ALR chapter makes nothing from this, other than good will and a good feeling to provide children a gift for the holidays. Hopefully, we will make enough money to also have a member benefit/picnic once a year, to show thanks to our members who have supported our efforts all year.
